Inside, Again
Re-released, “Inside” by Mother Mother is back and better with soundtrack and art additions.
March 1, 2022
This is not the first time this album has been released…sort of. “Inside (Deluxe)” is a new Mother Mother album released on Jan. 28. The album is a revamp from the original album, “Inside,” released on June 25, 2021. This ‘Deluxe’ version of the album has seven new songs, including “Hayloft II,” and a new album cover.
Mother Mother is an indie rock band from Canada that consists of artists Ryan Guldemond, Molly Guldemond, Ali Siadat, Jasmin Parkin, and Mike Young. They had their peak during 2021 when songs like “Hayloft,” “Verbatim,” and “Arms Tonite” sky-rocketed in popularity through TikTok.
Consisting of 21 songs total, the album can be described as creepy, melancholy, and desolate. Through those themes in the instrumentals, it feels as if there is someone there to console you. During the bridge of “All the Dying,” Ryan Guldemond, Molly Guldemond, and Parkin sing, “I see an image of a body, broken and beet red.” Listeners can feel their compassion: the musicians do see their fans. They do hear you.
When listening to the whole album in order, the beginning and end of songs blend together, especially “Seven” and “Two.” The end of “Seven” blends into the beginning of “Two,” and because “Seven” is fully instrumental, it just sounds like one big-long intro. The way the songs blend together is incredible because each song still has a beat or feel to differentiate them.
“Inside (Deluxe)” has several themes about being at a low-point. “Girl Alone” and “Forgotten Souls” prove that right off the bat with their titles. The lyrics in “Girl Alone” and “Forgotten Souls” express that listeners are not the only ones experiencing certain emotions and that they’re not alone in how they feel. These songs share a message that you are alone and it’s okay, which was a common feeling for many of us during quarantine.
Mother Mother has come a long way, just like this album. Since 2005, they have reached a huge audience and continue to write music fans thrive for. If they still write music in the upcoming years, it’s expected that their music will become more raw and deep as far as the feelings represented. Their music is relatable, and when they write lyrics about serious feelings, like premonition or feeling desolate, it appeals more to fans.
This album is a perfect soundtrack for laying in your bed just reminiscing. As Mother Mother sings in “Girl Alone,” “I might be just like you.”
