In celebration of 20 years since the 2004 release of MF DOOM’s fifth studio album “MM..FOOD,” Rhymesayers Entertainment released a posthumous album adding on remixes and unreleased interviews featuring the artist.
Daniel Dumille, better known as MF DOOM, was born in Hounslow, United Kingdom, and raised in Long Island, New York. DOOM’s rise in popularity in the underground was marked by personal tragedy and, as a result, one-of-a-kind reinvention. After the death of his brother and the collapse of his music group KMD, Dumille disappeared from the music scene, only to return years later as the persona known as MF DOOM, donning a now-iconic mask from the 2000s film “Gladiator.” This transformation separated Dumille from industry norms, as becoming DOOM allowed him to illustrate a surreal, comic book world through his layered rhymes, obscure cartoon samples, and mischievous sense of humor.
MF DOOM was quickly recognized for his lyrical genius and narrative, turning his albums into rich, layered experiences that uncovered a story through careful listens. His ability to weave together the chaos of varying audio bytes, cryptic verses, and fragmented stories into a seamless tapestry solidified his position as one of hip-hop’s most innovative figures.
His fifth studio album, “MM..FOOD,” released on Nov. 16, 2004, became one of his most popular albums, peaking on the charts just a day later on Nov. 17 2004. The concept album takes common foods found at a picnic and connects them to the real world through metaphor, with the production adding another layer of complexity. The rambling villainous speeches sampled from old Marvel TV shows about Doctor Von Doom and the jazz and hip-hop-inspired tracks made “MM..FOOD” one of DOOM’s most beloved art.
MF DOOM passed away in 2020, but his influence remains strong in the music industry. “MM..FOOD” achieved a new milestone with “Rapp Snitch Knishes” reaching platinum status and “H*e Cakes” and “One Beer” hitting gold. Two decades later, this rerelease invites a fresh evaluation of the album and its added remixes and unreleased interviews.
20 years have passed since the release of “MM..FOOD,” igniting interest in a remix album from Rhymesayers Entertainment. The remixes were produced by artists who in the past worked very closely with Dumille. Artists like Madlib and Jake One gave fresh takes on the production side of the album, keeping DOOM’s original vocals. The remixes were laced with the same skill and attention to detail that the original production was crafted with. The punchy and intense production on the remixes did justice for the 20th year this iconic album has lived.
