On Monday, Mar. 17, students celebrated St. Patrick’s Day, starting off the week upbeat by celebrating in various ways. The halls were filled with countless shades of green as students showed their enthusiasm. “I [celebrate] for fun because it seems very festive and it’s really enjoyable to see all the different people wearing green with you,” freshman Roma Rudrakshala said.
Along with being a fun tradition to bring up your mood, lots of students have prior memories of the holiday that uplift them and make them more excited to celebrate each year. “ I loved going with the elementary schoolers and decorating and helping mess up the younger kids’ classrooms,” freshman Zunairah Hasan said. People also remembered celebrating out of school and kept memories of the holiday. “We typically went and saw all the decorations and the green fountains and all the activities in D.C.,” Hasan said.
St. Patrick’s Day is an Irish holiday that celebrates the patron saint of Ireland. Sophomore Avery McCarty comes from an Irish family, and her family does a little more than most on St. Patrick’s Day. “Sometimes I go to parades or festivals and, of course, wear green, and this morning we ate hot cross buns which is an Irish thing,” McCarty said. Even though it is an Irish holiday, many people celebrate just for fun and to have a good time. “I just like to celebrate because it’s fun and everyone participates and likes to wear green,” freshman Priya Bojji said.
This year, Rock Ridge didn’t plan any event to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day as a community, but students still found ways to make the day special themselves. “ I see lots of people wearing green and lots of pinching,” Hasan said. “But I also see teachers doing fun stuff with their kids. In the future, if Rock Ridge decides to celebrate in some way, students have ideas on how they can observe. I think it could be fun if this became a spirit day so everyone could wear green and they could also have food related to this day or add decorations,” Rudrakshala said.
