On Thursday, May 5, the Phoenix girls varsity soccer team played the Dominion Titans at home. The game started off with both teams evenly matched, as possession of the ball was consistently changing and neither team was able to capitalize on their chances, keeping the score tied at 0-0.

During the first half, the Titans scored the first point putting them up 1-0, but the Phoenix quickly responded as senior Ayanna Fabunmi (6) hit a penalty to tie the game at 1-1. “We were able to connect passes to build through the midfield and then get forward into the wide spaces to cross it, so I think as a team we performed well,” junior Leah Gutshall (13) said.

After halftime, the Phoenix defense was not able to contain the Titans as they came out and scored two quick goals to put them up 3-1. “Sofia Difulvio (2) was able to go in goal whenever we needed her, so she ended up playing as a field player and goalie, which really helped the team perform the best they could in this game,” Gutshall said.

Despite the Phoenix building a number of scoring opportunities, they were unable to score a second goal. The Titans went on to score three more goals to end the game 6-1.
