When college first comes to mind, many students feel a sense of adulthood. On one hand, college life comes with parties, community, and more challenging coursework, yet students are constantly facing shifting decisions and the daunting tuition of college.
According to the Education Data Initiative, “The average cost of college in the United States is $38,270 per student per year.” This is unfortunately unaffordable for many students, which is why a reasonable and sometimes better option for higher education is community college, like Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA)
First established in 1964, Northern Virginia Technical College is one of the largest community colleges in the U.S. with six campuses in Alexandria, Annandale, Woodbridge, Manassas, Loudoun, and a Medical Education Campus in Springfield. It offers 91 areas of study and 123 programs with a degree.
So what makes NOVA so appealing??
The price is reasonable. The estimated cost of attendance for the 2025-2026 academic year for going to NOVA while living at home is $10,850. The estimated cost for not living at home is $13,416. For out-of-state students, the cost is higher but reasonable, with commuter tuition approaching $14,147.
For the 2025-2026 year, in-state tuition is about $6,062 to $6,085 per year for a full-time student (15 credits per semester). Out-of-state tuition is $12,000–$13,000 annually.
However, while NOVA excels with their affordability, close distance, and their countless programs, it does lack in areas most colleges excel in, such as party life and community. However, for those who wish to transfer with credits to colleges and form connections, NOVA has a guaranteed admission program, partnering with colleges like George Mason, Virginia Tech, and the University of Virginia. For example, over 4,500 students have attended NOVA and transferred to GMU.
The guaranteed admission program is also great for students who have less than great grades in high school, as NOVA is a perfect chance to raise GPAs and get into competitive schools.
While community college may be looked down on and easily dismissed, it’s a reality a lot of Rock Ridge students have to navigate. In fact, nearly 10% of Rock Ridge’s seniors last year went on to attend a community college. High school students looking for affordable tuition and a chance to recover academically should seriously consider attending NOVA, where they can grow, thrive, and reach their full potential.
