On Jan. 23, Rock Ridge’s hockey team won against Riverside Rams in an 11-1 game, continuing a strong offensive stretch as they prepare for the playoffs.
The win against Riverside fits into the pattern of recent success Rock Ridge has had throughout the season. In the weeks leading up to the game, the team had several victories, including a 10-0 shutout against Tuscarora/Loudoun. Rock Ridge scored more than nine goals in four games this season, demonstrating the same teamwork that led to the win against Riverside.
Rock Ridge set the tone for the game early, scoring five goals in the first period and quickly gaining momentum. The team continued that strong performance into the second period, with four additional goals before closing out the game with two more in the third. Riverside’s only goal came in the second period, but it did little to slow Rock Ridge’s performance on the ice.
Rock Ridge’s control of the game was reflected in the shot count, as they got a record of 26 shots on goal compared to Riverside’s five. The team created scoring chances early and often, outshooting the Rams 16-0 in the first period alone. Riverside didn’t manage to get a shot in until the second period, highlighting the defense and pressure put out by Rock Ridge to limit offensive opportunities for Riverside.
Junior Brooks Furtek mentioned that both teams played well in both offense and defense during the game. “Not giving up goals was the most important part,” Furtek said. “We knew that we were going to score a lot, but keeping the other team from scoring mattered more.”
Despite their victory, players acknowledged that there was always room for growth. “It’s hard to judge how good we are against a team like that,” Furtek said. “There are still things we need to work on.”
Head coach David Bultema highlighted the team’s improved chemistry as one of the major factors of their win against Riverside.“They’re acting more as a team, as the season goes on, they learn where their teammates are on the ice, and their passing improves,” Bultema said. “You could see that today.”
He also stressed the importance of leadership and sportsmanship, especially during one-sided games. “A good leader cheers on the team when they’re winning and when they’re losing,” Bultema said, “it’s about being a good teammate and respecting the game.”
Rock Ridge will continue to build on their performance as the season comes to an end. The team finished the season third in the Smythe division with a 6-2-2 record and will take on John Champe/Lightridge on Feb. 23 at 5:10 at the Ashburn Ice House.
Update: A previous version of this article incorrectly stated the Phoenix would take on Loudoun Valley/Woodgrove for their first-round playoff game.
